Themed Sundays-Science Fiction

themed sundays

What do aliens, super cool laser guns/swords and Star Wars all have in comment? Well, they are all science-fiction and that is the theme for this Sunday.

According to Google, science fiction can be defined as

Fiction based on imagined future scientific or technological advances and major social or environmental changes, frequently portraying space or time travel and life on other planets.

In no particular order here are some Science Fiction books to deal with the above topics.

Plus, if you think any of these books sound good, just click on the title and it’ll take you to Goodreads so you can add it to your want to read list!

1. The 100 by Kass Morgan

In the future, humans live in city-like spaceships orbiting far above Earth’s toxic atmosphere. No one knows when, or even if, the long-abandoned planet will be habitable again. But faced with dwindling resources and a growing populace, government leaders know they must reclaim their homeland… before it’s too late.

Now, one hundred juvenile delinquents are being sent on a high-stakes mission to recolonize Earth. After a brutal crash landing, the teens arrive on a savagely beautiful planet they’ve only seen from space. Confronting the dangers of this rugged new world, they struggle to form a tentative community. But they’re haunted by their past and uncertain about the future. To survive, they must learn to trust – and even love – again. -goodreads.com

2. Falls the Shadow by Stefanie Gaither

falls the shadows

When Cate Benson was a kid, her sister, Violet, died. Two hours after the funeral, Cate’s family picked up Violet’s replacement. Like nothing had happened. Because Cate’s parents are among those who decided to give their children a sort of immortality—by cloning them at birth—which means this new Violet has the same smile. The same perfect face. Thanks to advancements in mind-uploading technology, she even has all of the same memories as the girl she replaced.

She also might have murdered the most popular girl in school.

At least, that’s what the paparazzi and the anti-cloning protestors want everyone to think: that clones are violent, unpredictable monsters. Cate is used to hearing all that. She’s used to defending her sister, too. But Violet has vanished, and when Cate sets out to find her, she ends up in the line of fire instead. Because Cate is getting dangerously close to secrets that will rock the foundation of everything she thought was true. -goodreads.com

3. Survival Colony 9 by Joshua David Bellin

survival colony 9

In a future world of dust and ruin, fourteen-year-old Querry Genn struggles to recover the lost memory that might save the human race.

Querry is a member of Survival Colony Nine, one of the small, roving groups of people who outlived the wars and environmental catastrophes that destroyed the old world. The commander of Survival Colony Nine is his father, Laman Genn, who runs the camp with an iron will. He has to–because heat, dust, and starvation aren’t the only threats in this ruined world.

There are also the Skaldi.

Monsters with the ability to infect and mimic human hosts, the Skaldi appeared on the planet shortly after the wars of destruction. No one knows where they came from or what they are. But if they’re not stopped, it might mean the end of humanity. -goodreads.com

Six months ago, Querry had an encounter with the Skaldi–and now he can’t remember anything that happened before then. If he can recall his past, he might be able to find the key to defeat the Skaldi.

If he can’t, he’s their next victim.

Survival Colony 9 is already in stores.

4. The Martian by Andy Weir

the martian

Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first men to walk on the surface of Mars. Now, he’s sure he’ll be the first man to die there.

It started with the dust storm that holed his suit and nearly killed him, and that forced his crew to leave him behind, sure he was already dead. Now he’s stranded millions of miles from the nearest human being, with no way to even signal Earth that he’s alive–and even if he could get word out, his food would be gone years before a rescue mission could arrive. Chances are, though, he won’t have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plain-old “human error” are much more likely to get him first.

But Mark isn’t ready to give up yet. Drawing on his ingenuity, his engineering skills–and a relentless, dogged refusal to quit–he steadfastly confronts one seemingly insurmountable obstacle after the next. But will his resourcefulness be enough to overcome the impossible odds against him? -goodreads.com

After the 1st wave, only darkness remains. After the 2nd, only the lucky escape. And after the 3rd, only the unlucky survive. After the 4th wave, only one rule applies: trust no one.

Now, it’s the dawn of the 5th wave, and on a lonely stretch of highway, Cassie runs from Them. The beings who only look human, who roam the countryside killing anyone they see. Who have scattered Earth’s last survivors. To stay alone is to stay alive, Cassie believes, until she meets Evan Walker.

Beguiling and mysterious, Evan Walker may be Cassie’s only hope for rescuing her brother—or even saving herself. But Cassie must choose: between trust and despair, between defiance and surrender, between life and death. To give up or to get up. -goodreads.com

  2. Reblogged this on Leona's Blog of Shadows and commented:
These books sound very promising. I remember seeing The Martian in Goodreads Choice awards 2014 Scifi genre list. I might review a couple of them when I get back into the scifi mood.

  3. These books sound great. I have seen The Martian on top of the Goodreads choice awards list, I might have seen the 5th Wave too. These days I read sword&sorcery, dark fantasy and fairy tale-ish YA stuff but added these to my goodreads to-read shelf for when I get back into the scifi reading mood. Awesome blog, btw. Now I’m off to read more of your posts.

    1. They do don’t they? I read the Martian and it was pretty good (some parts were slow) but he explains all tthe space science he does really well! I tend to read more fantasy too ^^ I though the Martian would be like 2001 a Space Odyssey but it was better and a nice change from my usual ^^ I hope that of you read it you’ll like it too ^^

      1. I just saw Interstellar, I should review some scifi books (I used to read a lot of them back in the day) but these days all I want to read is fantasy, and more epic fantasy! Since I am writing an epic fantasy book (first of a trilogy) staying in that mood and reading only fantasy helps focusing (I have very severe ADD, so reading fantasy and going to medieval festivals is what kept be focused enough to write 32k words so far) I will definitely go on a scifi reading spree once I finish writing and revising this first novel of mine!

  4. Epic fantasy as the genre, a long story spanning over the years, like LOTR (though my story is not quite like LOTR, it’s more like ASOIAF/Game of Thrones but high fantasy (with non-human races andmore supernatural/magical elements)
